going gray

I am becoming a bit tired of dying my hair and
would like to find it's "natural gray state" but . . .
I don't know how to get there.

This is a photo of my daughter's friend with lovely gray hair.

An extensive search on the world wide web
has not proved to be very helpful.

If anyone has any helpful tips or ideas, I'd be very grateful.

  1. I'm not going to be of any help here but you can bet I'll be checking back for any comments. I've wondered that myself. How do you go from colored hair to your natural state gracefully without having to shave your entire head?

  2. The thought of not dying my hair anymore does sound so nice! My friend had her hair colored lighter and it allowed her to grown her hair out without noticing too much. she also cut her hair short. Good luck...keep us updated :)

  3. If you find out the secret, let ME know!
I was thinking the very same thing, the other day.
The money, the time, the look, all say it's time to go natural.

  4. Hi..I came over from Holly's at Hoosier at Heart...your post title caught my attention. From someone who has been there the best advice I can give is don't look in the mirror! for about a year. It is so hard to grow out (or cut off) all the old color but that is the only way to get there. It has been a year and a half since I last colored but to tell the truth I fight coloring it almost every day. I love the freedom of not coloring but I know it makes me look older and probably more tired...a trade off for sure.

  5. I will highlight mine for as long as I can because I remember when my mom let hers go gray, she all of a sudden looked old and I don't want to do that. With some blonder highlights, the gray can show through too and it's much easier to do it that way. :D

  6. No really good advice, other than if you really want to do it, get a new cut (not drastic!) and keep doing that until it's all in. I'd do this with lots of help from the hairdresser.
My hair is (was!) nearly black, and it's only in the last few years that salt and pepper have started to show up. There's no way to colour such dark hair without looking like Mortitia Adams (LOL) so I embrace the S&P!

  7. You are a brave sole! I'm not ready for that part of my life so I will continue to get mine highlighted. This was as the roots grow out in the lovely color of grey it blends in with the blonde highlights. What we women won't do just to avoid what is coming! Have a great day! Jude

  9. I hear a lot of women singing this same song. :)

I have a little gray now, but it doesn't show much yet, even though I'm past 50, and have never colored my hair.

My dad had dark hair until he was almost 70, and my mom still has a lot of dark hair, and she's almost 80. So ... I guess it runs in my family to not gray much. I hope when that day comes that I let it happen naturally and not color it, but we'll see. :)

  10. I have friends who have gone this same route, with some of the same thought processes, and I think they look so good with the gray. I don't have an answer on how to do it, but I do think the final look can be pretty on women. Wish you the best in your endeavor.

  11. The women in my family grey early in life we have 30 and 35 year olds in my family with grey hair coming in already

What I did was quit coloring and had a very short boy hair (I call it)cut one summer and let it grow out grey. buy winter I had a short bob . People told me they loved the real short hair cut on me .
That way it grows out all same color instead of the root effect showing

  12. I started going grey when I was 22. Now I'm 37 and completely grey...like white grey. I have to color my hair every 5 weeks. It is expensive & just a pain to have to go in all the time. I soooo wish I could find an alternative. I feel a bit too young to let it grow out. Make sure to write a follow up post & let us know what you find. Good luck!

  15. I've been coloring off and on for several years, never thought I would - ha! The deal is that my skin is very, very fair a/k/a white! and with mildly grayish/blondish looking hair, I look like I'm ill. Are we laughing yet? Just talked to my hairdresser about coming up with something, anything to bring my hair back to life. Good luck on growing yours out, sounds like you've gotten lots of good advice.
